(15) Those who commit unlawful sexual intercourse of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify, confine the guilty women to houses until death takes them or Allah ordains for them [another] way. (16) And the two who commit it among you, dishonor them both. But if they repent and correct themselves, leave them alone. Indeed, Allah is ever Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
Two Jews committed adultery, so they were brought to the Prophet (PBUH), who commanded that they be stoned. Narrator added: I saw the man shielding her with his own body.
Ma'iz ibn Malik came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. The Prophet (PBUH) replied: Woe to you! Go back and seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to him. The man went back not far. Then he came and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) replied: Woe to you! Go back and seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to him. He went back not far. Then he came and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. The Prophet (PBUH) said the same thing. When it was the fourth time, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said to him: What should I purify you from?! The man said: From adultery. The Messenger of Allah asked: Is he mad? And he was told that he was not mad. He said: Has he drunk wine? A man got up and smelled him but did not find the smell of wine on him. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) asked him: Did you commit adultery? The man replied: Yes. So the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) commanded and he was stoned to death. People were divided into two groups. One said: He is doomed, his sin has encompassed him. The other said: There is no better repentance than the repentance of Ma'iz. He came to the Prophet (PBUH) and he put his hand in his hand and said: Kill me with stones. They remained like that for two or three days. Then the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) came while they were sitting, so he greeted them, sat down and said: Ask forgiveness for Ma'iz ibn Malik. They said: May Allah forgive Ma'iz bin Malik. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: He has made such a repentance that if it were to be divided among a nation it would be sufficient for all of them. Later, a woman from Ghamid from Azd came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and said: O Messenger of Allah, purify me. He said: Woe to you! Go back and seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to him. She said: I see that you want to send me back as you sent back Ma’iz ibn Malik. He exclaimed: What is that? She said that she has become pregnant from adultry. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) exclaimed: Is it you?! She said: Yes. He said to her: Wait until you deliver what is in your womb. Narrator said: A man from the Ansar took care of her until she gave birth. Then he went to the Prophet (PBUH) and said: The woman of Ghamid has given birth. The Prophet (PBUH) said: In this case, we shall not stone her and leave her infant with no one to suckle him. A man from the Ansar stood up and said: I will be responsible for his suckling, O Prophet of Allah. So she was stoned.
The Jews brought to the Prophet (PBUH) a man and a woman from among them who had committed adultery. The Prophet (PBUH) said: What do you find in your Book? They said: We soot their faces and disgrace them. The Prophet (PBUH) said: You have lied. It has stoning for it. So bring the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful. So they brought the Torah and brought a one-eyed reciter of theirs called Ibn Suriya. He recited until he reached a verse and placed his hand over it. It was said to him: Take off your hand. So he took off his hand and behold, it was clearly there. He said, or they said: ‘O Muhammad, there is stoning, but we used to conceal it among ourselves. So the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) commanded that they be stoned. Narrator said: I saw him [the Jew being stoned] throwing himself over her to protect her from the stones.
