The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sent an expedition to the coast and put Abu 'Ubeidah ibn Al-Jarrah in command. They were three hundred. He said: And I was among them. So we set out until we had gone part of the way, the provisions ran out. Abu 'Ubeidah commanded the provisions of that army to be collected, and they were all collected. My provisions were dates. Abu 'Ubeida kept on giving us a ration little by little every day until it [almost] ran out and nothing was left for us except one date at a time. So Wahb asked Jaber: What good is a date? He replied: We came to know its value when they ran out. He added: Then we reached the sea and there was a huge fish like a hill. So that army ate from it for eighteen nights. Then Abu 'Ubeidah commanded two of its ribs to be set up. Then he commanded a camel to be mounted, so it passed under them and did not touch them.
