(1) Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
(13) And he certainly saw him in another descent. (14) At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary. (15) Near it is the Garden of Refuge. (16) When that which covers the Lote Tree covers [it]. (17) The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. (18) He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
Al-Buraq was brought to me , a white animal bigger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, placing its hoof as far as it could see, so I mounted it and it took me to Bait Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). I tied the animal to the ring used by the prophets, then I entered and prayed two rak’ahs in it, then I came out and Gabriel came to me with a vessel of wine and a vessel of milk, so I chose the milk. Gabriel said: You have chosen the fitrah (innateness). Then we were ascended to the lowest heaven. Gabriel asked for the gates to be opened, and he was asked: Who are you? He replied: Gabriel. Then it was said and who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said, He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and lo! there was Adam. He welcomed me and made a supplication for my goodness. Then we were ascended to the second heaven. Gabriel asked for the gates to be opened, and he was asked: Who are you? He replied: Gabriel. Then it was said and who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said, He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and lo! there was my maternal cousins, Yahya and 'Isa (John and Jesus). They welcomed me and made a supplication for my goodness. Then we were ascended to the third heaven. Gabriel asked for the gates to be opened, and he was asked: Who are you? He replied: Gabriel. Then it was said and who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said, He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and lo! there was Yousuf (Joseph), and he was given half of the handsomeness. So he welcomed me and made a supplication for my goodness. Then we were ascended to the fourth heaven. Gabriel asked for the gates to be opened, and he was asked: Who are you? He replied: Gabriel. Then it was said and who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said, He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and lo! there was Idris. He welcomed me and made a supplication for my goodness. Then the Prophet (PBUH) said: Allah says: {And we raised him to a high station} [Maryam: 57]. Then we were ascended to the fifth heaven. Gabriel asked for the gates to be opened, and he was asked: Who are you? He replied: Gabriel. Then it was said and who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said, He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and lo! there was Haroon (Aaron), so he welcomed and made a supplication for my goodness. Then we were ascended th uto the sixth heaven. Gabriel asked for the door to be opened, and it was said: Who are you? Gabriel said: It was said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad. Then it was said: Has he been sent to him? He said: He has been sent to him. So it was opened for us, and lo! there was Moses, so he welcomed us and made a supplication for my goodness. Then we were ascended to the seventh heaven. Gabriel asked for the gates to be opened, and he was asked: Who are you? He replied: Gabriel. Then it was said and who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said, He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and lo! there was Abraham, and there he was leaning against the Al-Beit Al-Ma'moor (The Bustlingly-Tended House), and there it is visited every day by seventy thousand angels who do not return to it. Then he took me to Sidrat Al-Muntaha (The Lote Tree of the Utmost Limit), and lo! there were its leaves, like the ears of elephants, and there were its fruit like jugs, then when it was covered by the command of Allah, it changed, and no one among Allah’s creation can describe its beauty. He said: Then Allah revealed to me what a revelation, and prescribed fifty prayers for me every day and night. Then I descended until I reached Moses, so he asked: What did your Lord prescribed for your nation? I said: Fifty prayers every day and night. He said: Go back to your Lord and ask him to reduce it, for your nation cannot bear that, and I have tried the Children of Israel and knew them. The Prophet (PBUH) said: So I went back to my Lord and said: O Lord, lighten the burden on my nation, so he cut down five for me. Then I went back to Moses, and he said: What did you do? I said: He cut down five for me. He said: Your nation cannot bear that, so go back to your Lord and ask him to reduce it for your nation. The Prophet (PBUH) said: So I kept going back and forth between my Lord and Moses, and my Lord reducing five by five for me until my Lord said: O Muhammad, they are five prayers every day and night. Each prayer credited as ten, so that is fifty prayers. And whoever intends to do a good deed but does not do it, it is recorded as a good deed, and if he does it, it is recorded as ten. And whoever intends to do a bad deed but does not do it, it is not recorded at all, but if he does it, it is recorded as one bad deed. So I descended until I reached Moses and told him. He said: Go back to your Lord and ask him to make things easier for your nation, for your nation cannot bear that, thereupon the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: I have gone back to my Lord until I felt shyness [to go back again].
I was in Al-Hijr (The Stone) and Quraysh were asking me about my Night Journey. They asked me about things in the Bait Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) that I did not memorize, so I was distressed in a way I had never been before. Then Allah raised it [Bait Al-Maqdis] up for me to look at it. So they did not ask me about anything except that I informed them about it. And I saw myself in a group of prophets, and behold, there was Moses standing praying. and he , a thin man with curly hair, as if he were one of the men of [the tribe of] Shanu’ah. And there was 'Isa (Jesus), son of Mary, standing praying. The one who most resembled him was 'Urwah ibn Mas’ud Ath-Thaqafeyy. And there was Abraham standing praying. The one who most resembled him was your companion, meaning himself. Then the time for prayer became due, so I led them in prayer. When I finished the prayer, someone said: O Muhammad, this is Malik, the Keeper of the Fire, so greet him. So I turned to him and he greeted me first.
When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was taken on the Night Journey, he reached Sidrat Al-Muntaha (The Lote Tree of the Utmost Limit), which is in the sixth heaven. Whatever ascends from the earth ends there and is taken from there, and whatever descends from above it ends there and is taken from there. He said: {When that which covers the Lote Tree covers [it]} [Al-Najm: 16]. Narrator said: Moths of gold. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was given three things: He was given the five daily prayers, he was given the concluding verses of Surat Al-Baqarah, and forgiveness of those of his nation who do not associate anything with Allah for grave sins.
Ash-Sheibaneyy said: I asked Zirr ibn Hubeish about the verse: {Then he was two bow lengths away or even nearer} [An-Najm: 9]. He said: Ibn Mas'ood informed me that the Prophet (PBUH) saw Gabriel, who had six hundred wings.
