We settled in place where the riders would pass by us on their way back from the Prophet (PBUH), so I would come close to them and listen until I had memorized much of the Qur’an. People were waiting for the conquest of Mecca to bring about their Islam. When it was conquered, a man would come to him and say: O Messenger of Allah, I am a delegate from the Banu So-and-so and I have come to you with them to announce our Islam. So my father set out with his people to announce our Islam, and when he returned he said: The Messenger of Allah said: Bring forward [to lead prayers] the one among you who has the most knowledge of the Qur’an. Narrator said: They looked while I was among lots of people and they did not find anyone among them who had the most knowledge of the Qur’an than me. So they brought me forward while I was a boy and I led them in prayer.
