The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade the sale of fruit for dates and said: That is riba, that is muzabanah, except the case of Al-'areyyah [lended item] in which he permitted the sale of [the fruit on] a borrowed palm tree or two, so that the people of the house would get ripe dates for estimated fruit on that palm tree.
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade muhaqalah (exchanging unharvested crops for a specific measure of a ripe equivalent), muzabanah (exchanging an estimated measure of fruit still on a tree for the same measure of ripe equivalent), mu'awamah (selling crops one or more years ahead), and mukhabarah (renting a land for a third or a quarter of its yield). One of them said: The sale of years is mu'awamah. He also forbade thunyah (a busuness transaction on a condition that seller is entitled to take back what he sold whenever he returns the payment, or a business transaction involving an unspecified exclusion), but permitted the ’areyyah.
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) gave permission to the holder of the areyyah (borrowed) palm tree to sell estimated measure of fruits on it for [equivalent measure of] dried dates.
