The Prophet (PBUH) advised a man when he goes to bed to say: O Allah, I submit myself to you, I turn my face to you, I entrust my affairs to you, and I rely completely on you, out of desire [of reward] and fear [of punishment]. There is no refuge or escape from you except to you. I believe in your Book which you revealed, and in your Prophet whom you sent. Narrator added: If he dies [on that night], he would die on fitrah (innateness).
When one of you wants to lie down on his bed, let him take off the inner part of his izar [lower garment], then dust his bed off with it, for he does not know what he left behind on it. Then let him lie down on his right side, then say: In your name, my Lord, I have laid my side, and by you I get it up. If you hold my soul, have mercy on it, and if you send it, protect it as you protect your righteous slaves.
When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) went to bed at night, he would say: O Allah, in your name we die and live. And when he woke up, he would say: Praise is due to Allah who brought us back to life after he caused us to die, and to him is the resurrection.
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to say in the evening: Evening fell over us and over the dominion and we all belong to Allah. Praise is due to Allah. There is no god except Allah. Him alone with no partners. To him belongs the dominion and to him praise is due, and he has absolute power over everything. Oh Allah, I ask you for the goodness of this night and the goodness of what is in it, and I seek refuge in you from its evil and the evil of what is in it. Oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from laziness, ageing, decrepitude, the trial of this world, and the torture of the grave.
Abu Bakr said to the Prophet (PBUH): Tell me something to say in the morning and in the evening. The Prophet (PBUH) said: Say, O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of everything and its Possessor. I bear witness that there is no god but you. I seek refuge in you from the evil of myself and the evil of Satan and his -incitement to- associating partners to Allah. Say it in the morning and in the evening and when you go to bed.
