My husband went out to pursue some fleed slaves of his, he caught up with them on the outskirts of Al-Qadum, but they killed him. His death news came to me while I was in a house that is far away from my family’s. So I came to the Prophet (PBUH) and mentioned this to him, so I said: My husband’s death news came to me in a house that is far away from my family’s. He did not leave me wealth to spend or wealth for his heirs, and the home was not his. If I turned to my family and my maternal uncles, This would be kinder to me in some of my affairs. The Prophet (PBUH) said: Go [to your family]. When I went out to the mosque or to the room, he called me or had me called to him, so he said: Stay in your house where your husband’s death news came to you until the prescribed waiting period is over. She said, so I stayed the waiting period there for four months and ten days. She said: So Uthman [when he became the ruler] sent for me [asking about this case to apply on a similar one], so I informed him, and he followed it.
A relative of Um Habibah died, so she called for a a yellow (perfume) and applied that to her forearm and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) or the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Hereafter to mourn a dead person for more than three days, except for a husband, for whom she mourns for four months and ten days.
