The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sent me, Az-Zubeir, and Abu Marthad, and we were all horsemen. He said: Go until you reach Rawdat Khakh, for there is a woman with a letter from Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah to the polytheists. Bring it to me. So we set out on our horses until we reached her on her camel where the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) had told us. Narrator said: A letter he [Hatib] had written to the people of Mecca informing them about the Messenger of Allah's marching to them. So we said to her: Where is the letter you have with you? She said: I have no letter. So we made her camel kneel and searched in her saddlebags, but we did not find anything in it. My two companions said: We do not see a letter with her. I said: You both know that the Messenger of Allah does not lie. Then I swore: By him whom I swear by, if you do not bring out the letter, I will strip you off. So she reached to her girdle, which was covered by a cloak, and brought out the letter. They brought it to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and said: O Messenger of Allah, he has betrayed Allah, his Messenger and the believers. One of them said: Let me chop his head off. He said: The Prophet (PBUH) said: O Hatib, what made you do what you did? He replied: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, it is not that I intended not be a believer in Allah and his Messenger, but I wanted to gain a hand among the people by which Allah would protect my family and my wealth. And there was none of your companions who does not have someone of his people there, by whom Allah Almighty would protect his family and his wealth? The Prophet (PBUH) said: You have spoken the truth. So do not say anything to him except what is good. 'Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, he has betrayed Allah, his Messenger, and the believers. Let me chop his neck off. The Prophet (PBUH) replied: Is he not one of the people of Badr?! And how do you know?! Perhaps Allah looked at them and said: Do whatever you want, for Paradise is guaranteed for you. 'Umar’s eyes welled up and said: Allah Almighty and his Messenger know best.
