The last person to enter Paradise will be a man. He will walk at times, stumble at times, and the Hellfire will scorch him at times. When he passes it, he will turn to it and say, 'Blessed is he who saved me from you. Indeed, Allah has given me something that he has not given to anyone from the earlier or later generations. Then a tree will be raised for him, and he will say: O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may sit in its shade and drink from its water. Allah will say: O son of Adam, perhaps if I give it to you, you will ask me for something else. He will say: No, my Lord, and will promise not to ask for anything else. His Lord will excuse him because he sees what he cannot bear to refrain from. So he brings him near to it, and he sits in its shade and drinks from its water. Then a tree better than the first will be raised for him, and he will say: O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may drink from its water and sit in its shade. I will not ask you for anything else. Allah will say: O son of Adam, did you not promise me that you would not ask for anything else? He will say: Perhaps if I bring you near it, you will ask me for something else. He will promise not to ask for anything else. His Lord will excuse him because he sees what he cannot bear to refrain from, and so he brings him near to it. He sits in its shade and drinks from its water. Then a tree will be raised for him at the gate of Paradise, better than the first two, and he will say: O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may sit in its shade and drink from its water. I will not ask you for anything else. Allah will say: O son of Adam, did you not promise me that you would not ask for anything else? He will say: Yes, my Lord, this time I will not ask for anything else. Allah will say: Perhaps if I bring you near it, you will ask me for something else. He will promise not to ask for anything else. His Lord will excuse him because he sees what he cannot bear to refrain from, and so he brings him near to it. When he brings him near to it, he hears the voices of the people of Paradise, and he says: O Lord, let me enter it. Allah will say: O son of Adam, what will bring an end to your requests from me? Would it please you if I give you the world and as much again with it? He will say: O Lord, are you mocking me while you are the Lord of the worlds? Ibn Mas'ud then laughed and said: Won't you ask me why I am laughing? They said: Why are you laughing? He said: This is how the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) laughed. They asked: Why are you laughing, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Because my Lord laughed when the man said: Are you mocking me while you are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will then say: I am not mocking you, but I am capable of doing whatever I will.
