A daughter of the the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sent to him that a child of hers, a son or daughter, was dying, and asking him to come. So, he sent greetings to her, telling her: To Allah belongs what he took and what he gave, and he has an appointed fixed term for everything. So, be patient and have the best expectations of Allah. So she sent adjuring him to come. So he set off and so did we. Then, the boy was lifted up to the lap of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) while -the boy's- soul was rattling. And among the people, Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah, and my father, I think. So the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) filled with tears, so Saad said to him: What is this, O Messenger of Allah? He replied: This is a mercy that Allah places in the hearts of whoever he wishes of his slaves. And Allah only shows mercy to those of his slaves who are merciful.
We went with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) to Abu Saif Al-Qein, who was Ibrahim’s foster father. So the Messenger of Allah took Ibrahim, kissed him, and smelled him. Later, we came in while Ibrahim was taking his last breaths, and the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was weeping. So Abd Al-Rahman ibn 'Awf said to him: You too, O Messenger of Allah? He replied: O Ibn 'Awf, it is mercy. Then he added: The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, and we do not say except what pleases our Lord, and we are grieved by your departure, O Ibrahim.
