When Zeinab’s waiting period ended, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said to Zeid: Go and mention me to her [that I want to marry her]. So he set out until he came to her. She was fermenting her dough. Zeid said: When I saw her, I felt her great honor in my heart that I could not look at her now that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) is about to marry her. So I turned my back to her and stepped back, and I said: O Zeinab, Good news! The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) has sent me proposing to you. She said: I will not do anything until I solicit the will of my Lord. Then she went to her praying place. The Qur’an [verses pertaining to her marriage] was then revealed, and the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) came and entered upon her without permission. Narrator said: I saw that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) fed us bread and meat. Then people went out but some remained talking in the house after the meal. So the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) went out and I followed him. He began to visit the rooms of his wives greeting them and they would say: O Messenger of Allah, how did you find your family [new wife]?! Narrator said: I do not know whether I told him that the people had left or he was informed. So he went back to the house, and when I was about to get in with him, he threw the curtain between me and him, as the verse pertaining to hijab had been revealed. And people were admonished with it [hijab verse]. {Do not enter the houses of the Prophet without permission unless invited for a meal, and do not come too early and wait around until the meal is ready. But if you are invited, then enter -on time-. Once you have eaten, then go on your way, and do not stay for casual talk. Such behaviour is truly annoying to the Prophet, yet he is too shy to ask you to leave. But Allah is never shy of the truth. And when you -believers- ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a barrier. This is purer for your hearts and theirs. And it is not right for you to annoy the Messenger of Allah, nor ever marry his wives after him. This would certainly be a major offence in the sight of Allah.} [Al-Ahzab: 53].
