(101) O you who have believed, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you. But if you ask about them while the Qur"an is being revealed, they will be shown to you. Allah has pardoned that which is past; and Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing. (102) A people asked such [questions] before you; then they became thereby disbelievers.
The Messenger of Allah addressed the people and said: O people, Allah has prescribed Hajj for you. Then, a man stood up and asked: Is it every year? until he said that three times, and the Messenger of Allah kept ignoring it. Then he said: If I had said yes, it would have been mandatory, and if it had been mandatory, you would not have done it. Then he said: Leave me as long as I have left you (abstain from seeking more details as long as I didn't provide them), for those before you were destroyed only because of their questioning and disagreement with their prophets. So, whatever I command you to do, do as much of it as you can, and whatever I forbid you to do, avoid it.
