We used to have wine drinkers brought to us during the time of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), the reign of Abu Bakr, and the early days of the reign of 'Umar. We would then hit them with our hands, our sandals, and our garments, until the early days of the reign of 'Umar, when he used to flog forty lashes. But when drunk people rebelled and became wicked, he would flog eighty lashes.
