Listening and obedience are mandatory for a Muslim whether he likes it or not, unless he is commanded to do something that involves disobedience to Allah. If he is ordered to commit a sin, then there is no listening and no obedience.
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sent an army and put a man in charge of them. He lit a fire and said: Go into it. Some people wanted to go into it, while others said: We are trying to run away from it [embraced Islam]! This was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), so he said to those who wanted to go into it: If you had gone into it, you would have stayed in it until the Day of Resurrection. And he spoke good words to the others and said: There is no obedience in what involves disobedience to Allah. Obedience is only in what is good.
