Islam is built on five (pillars): Testimony that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is his messenger, establishing prayers (Salah), giving Zakah, pilgrimage to sacred mosque (Hajj), and fasting Ramadan.
A man from the people of Najd with unkempt hair came to the Messenger of Allah. The humming of his voice was heard but what he was saying was not understood until he approached, and lo he was asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah said to him: Five prayers a day and night. The man said: Do I have to do anything beyond them? He said: No, unless you supererogare more. The Prophet said: And fasting the month of Ramadan. The man said: Do I have to do anything beyond it? The Prophet said: No, unless you supererogare more. And the Messenger of Allah mentioned Az-Zakah to him. The man said: Do I have to do anything beyond that? The Prophet said: No, unless you supererogare more. Then the man turned away, saying: By Allah, I will not add more to this nor detract from it. The Messenger of Allah said: He would succeed if he is truthful.
