(112) But whoever earns an offense or a sin and then blames it on an innocent [person] has taken upon himself a slander and manifest sin.
(12) Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"?
(16) And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allah]; this is a great slander"?
(12) O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
A talebearer shall not enter heaven.
When my Lord had me ascended [to heaven], I passed by people with nails of copper with which they were scratching their faces and chests. I asked: Who are these, O Gabriel?! He replied: These are the ones who eat the flesh of people [backbiting] and slander their honor.
Beware of suspicion, beware of suspicion, beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the falsest of speech. Do not deceitfully outbid one another, do not envy one another, do not compete, do not hate one another, do not turn your backs on one another, and be, O worshippers of Allah, and brothers.
