We pledged allegiance to the Prophet (PBUH), and one of the terms was that we should not wail over the deceased. A woman from the Ansar said: The family of so-and-so wailed over one of my relatives -as a gesture of compassion- in pre-Islamic times, and they have a funeral, so I will not pledge allegiance to you until I wail over their deceased as they did over mine. Um Atiyya said: It was as if the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) agreed with her on that, so she went and wailed, then came back and pledged allegiance to the Prophet (PBUH). Um Atiyya added: No woman among us has fulfilled the pldege other than that one, and Um Salim bint Milhan.
