(6) And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful. (7) And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allah be upon him if he should be among the liars. (8) But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the liars. (9) And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was of the truthful. (10) And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Accepting of repentance and Wise.
A man invoked curses on his wife (charging her of adultery) in the time of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and disowned her child, so the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) separated them and attributed the child to the woman.
Li'an was mentioned in the presence the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), and 'Asim ibn 'Adi said something about it then he left. Later a man from his folks came to him and complained that he had found a man with his wife. 'Asim said: I have been taken by my words. So he took the man to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), and he told him about the situation with his wife. That man was yellow-skinned, slim, and with straight hair. The one whom he claimed to have been found with his wife had fleshy shanks, dark skin, and was plump, so the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: Oh Allah, reveal the truth. So she gave birth to a baby that was resembling the man whom her husband mentioned that he found with her, so the Prophet (PBUH) conducted the procedure of li'an between them.
