When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) heard that Abu Sufyan was approaching, he consulted his companions. Abu Bakr spoke, but the Prophet (PBUH) turned away from him. Then 'Umar spoke, but the Prophet (PBUH) also turned away from him. Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah said: O Messenger of Allah, do you want [to hear] us?! By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if you commanded us to wade [with our horses] through the seas, we would wade through them. And if you commanded us to goad them to Bark al-Ghimad [distant place], we would do so. So the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) called upon the people and they set out [to the fight] until they reached Badr. Then the Quraysh’s water-carriers arrived, and among them was a black slave of Banu Al-Hajjaj. So the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) took him. They would ask him about Abu Sufyan and his companions, and he would say: I know nothing about Abu Sufyan, but Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, Sheibah, and Umayyah ibn Khalaf are there. When he said that, they would beat him. When they beat him, he would say, Yes, I will tell you. Abu Sufyan is there. When they left him, they would ask him again, and he would say: I know nothing about Abu Sufyan, but Abu Jahl, 'Utbah, Shaibah, and Umayyah are among the people. And when he said that, they would beat him also! The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was standing praying. When he saw that, he finished his prayer and said: By the One in whose Hand is my soul, you beat him when he tells the truth and leave him when he lies. Narrator said: Then the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) then said: This is where So-and-so will be killed -putting his hand on the ground here and there- tomorrow. Narrator commented: And none of them missed the place where the hand of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was.
