On the day of Hunein, Hawazin, Ghatafan, and others came with their livestock and families, and the Prophet (PBUH) had ten thousand soldiers and pardoned people [of Mecca after its conquest]. They turned away from him until he was left alone. He called out twice that day, without saying anything between those two calls. He turned to his right and called out: O people of Ansar. They replied: At your call, O Messenger of Allah, rejoice, we are with you. Then he turned to his left and called out: O people of Ansar. They replied: At your call, O Messenger of Allah, rejoice, we are with you. He was on a white mule, so he dismounted and said: I am a slave of Allah and his Messenger. Then the polytheists were defeated, and on that day he captured much booty, which he divided among the emigrants and pardoned people, but did not give the Ansar anything. So the Ansar said: In times of distress, it is we who are called upon, and the booty is given to others. This remark reached the Prophet (PBUH), so he gathered them in a tent and said: O people of Ansar, what is the talk that has reached me about you? They remained silent. He said: O group of Ansar, Will not you be pleased that people take the world and you take the Messenger of Allah back to your homes? They said: Yes. The Prophet (PBUH) said: If the people took a valley and the Ansar took a ravine, I would take the ravine of the Ansar.
When Allah bestowed upon his Messenger on the day of Hunein what he bestowed [booty], he distributed the booty among those whose hearts were newly won-over [new tentative muslims], but he did not distribute among or give anything to the Ansar. It was as if they were saddened that they had not been given their share of booty like other people had. So he addressed them and said: O people of Ansar, have I not find you astray and Allah guided you through me? And you were divided and Allah united you through me? And you were poor and Allah enriched you through me? Narrator said: Every time the Prophet (PBUH) said something, Al-Ansar said: Allah and his Messenger are the ones who do more favors. The Prophet (PBUH) said: What prevents you from answering me? They said: Allah and his Messenger are the ones who do more favors. He said: If you wished, you could have said: You have come to us in such and such state [at Al-Madinah]! Will not you be pleased that people should go with the sheep and the camel and you go back with the Messenger of Allah to your homes? Had it not been for the migration, I would have been a man from the Ansar. If people took a valley or a ravine, I would take the valley of the Ansar and their ravine. The Ansar are as undergarments to me and the people are like outergarment. And you will encounter discrimination after me, so be patient until you meet me at the Basin.
