(2) O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not. (3) Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah - they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.
When this verse was revealed: {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet} [Al-Hujurat: 2], and Thabit bin Qais bin Al-Shammas had a high-pitched voice, so he said: I am the one who used to raise my voice against the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). My work is in vain. I am one of the people of Hell. And he sat among his family sad. Then the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) asked about him. So some pople went to him and said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) is asking about you. What’s the matter with you? He said: I am the one who raises his voice above the voice of the Prophet, and I speak out loudly: My work is in vain, and I am one of the people of Hell. So they came to the Prophet (PBUH) and told him what he had said. So he said: No, rather he is from the people of Paradise. Anas said: Then we used to see him walking among us, and we know that he is from the people of Paradise. When it was the Day of Al-Yamamah, we were somewhat exposed, so Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas came, and he had applied scents/spices over his body and put on his shroud, and he said: Wretched is what you accustomed your peers (scolding those fleeing), and he fought them until he was killed.
