When the trench was being dug, I saw the Prophet (PBUH) extremely hungry, so I turned to my wife and said: Do you have anything? I saw the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) extremely hungry. She brought out a bag containing a sa' (2 - 4.2kg) of barley, and we had a domesticated young sheep, so I slaughtered it and she ground the barley, and we both finished at the same time. Then I cut the meat into pieces, and put it into a pot. Then on my way back to the Messenger of Allaah (PBUH), my wife said: Do not embarrass me in front of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and those with him. So I went back to him and spoke to him privately and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have slaughtered a young sheep of ours and ground a sa’ of barley that we had, so come along with some people. The Prophet (PBUH) shouted: O people of the trench, Jabir has prepared a meal, so let us go. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said to Jabir: Do not take your pot down from fire, and do not bake your dough until I come. So I went home, and the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) came leading the people. When I came to my wife, she started to blame me saying: May Allah do this and do that to you. I said: I have done what you said. So she brought out some dough for the Prophet (PBUH), so he spat into it and blessed it. Then he went to our pot, spat in it, blessed it, and said: Call a baker to bake with me, and ladle from your pot, and do not take it down from fire. They [companions] were a thousand. I swear by Allah that they have eaten until they left it and went away. Our pot was still boiling over [full] as it was, and our dough is still being baked as it was.
