(158) Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs "umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.
We set out with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) five days before the end of Zthul-Qi'dah intending to observe Hajj. When we approached Mecca, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) commanded that whoever did not have a sacrificial animal with him, should exit state of ihram after circumambulating the House [Ka'bah] and pacing between Safa and Marwah. 'A'ishah said: Then on the Slaughter [Sacrifice] day, Beef was brought to us. I said: What is this? They said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) has slaughtered [sacrificed] on behalf of his wives.
When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) performed the first circumambulation, he jogged three circuits and walked four, and he walked swiftly at the rainwater passage when pacing between Safa and Marwah.
For the first circumambulation of Hajj or Umrah [that is done upon arrival to Ka'bah], the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to jog in three circuits, walk four, then pray two rak'ahs, then perform pacing between Safa and Marwah.
